LATITUDE, LEIGHTON BEACH
Latitude Leighton Beach is a three-stage residential redevelopment project on WA’s coast. The development began in 2014 with the Prima building (42 apartments), then came the Meridian building (67 apartments), and finally Compass (104 apartments) was completed in late 2020. It is the culmination of Mirvac’s 15-year involvement in the suburb, delivering luxury residential alongside major community amenity such as the Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club, amphitheatre and hospitality outlets.
Redevelopment has transformed disused railway marshalling yards into a vibrant coastal residential precinct. Mirvac Design conceived Latitude’s three buildings to be distinct yet harmonious with each other and with their beachside setting.
At Prima, materiality is inspired by the coastal environment. Locally sourced Donnybrook sandstone is used extensively at the ground plane, with timber, stone and a warm palette reflecting the natural context. Upper levels are set back to reduce the perception of building height, while horizontally, buildings are broken into a series of heavily articulated forms to relieve mass and scale, a sophisticated mix of white frames, bronze-coloured sliding louvres and large timber look elliptical louvres in between balconies.
Also at five storeys high, Meridian is oriented around an internal courtyard with garden break-out areas, bocce green, barbecues and gymnasiums.
Compass, the final stage of the development, enjoys south-west view corridors and from its resort-like roof terrace, ocean vistas from Fremantle to Cottesloe. The striking white and grey palette is a contemporary reinterpretation of the local landscape, while the angled balconies and anodized louvres articulate the façade and elegantly balance light and shadow, privacy and views.
