Apartment with No Walls

UP and Mirvac Design recently partnered with Mirvac Development on an exciting ideas competition for all to enter.

The aim was to seek creative ideas for a flexible / multifunctional / prototype-able 'Apartment with NO Walls', and the brief was developed around real opportunities being considered and the potential for ideas to be developed to help inform future initiatives.

As the needs of the customers shift and change it is important that apartments adapt as well. Customers want more flexibility and the ability to use their apartments in new and different ways. Importantly, they want to be involved in making, defining, and curating their spaces.

Design has been at the heart of Mirvac since being co-founded by an architect 45 years ago. Our strength is in the diversity and enduring quality of our designs, and our site specific responses to brief and context which produce differentiation and design excellence.

We have the ability to adapt and evolve across changing markets and locations, creating new and inventive design solutions aligned to Mirvac’s strategic goals and vision to reimagine urban life.

We embrace the opportunity to work with others in a team environment, recognising the right time to partner with external designers. We have instigated internal design reviews by inviting guest critics to stretch and inspire our design thinking. Our expertise is continually being enhanced and strengthened through research and generating knowledge networks.

All of Mirvac Design was invited to submit an A3 conceptual design and a 200 word design statement for the competition for either a one or two bedroom apartment. Teamwork was encouraged, and there were 18 entries submitted, which were all anonymous.

Following a rigorous judging process, the field was narrowed down to five finalists who were invited to present their schemes to the judging panel and all entrants at a celebratory breakfast at Butcher and the Farmer at Tramsheds, recently developed by Mirvac.

Ultimately the winners were announced, and team Magno-Wall were successful, comprising Mark Zwolsman and Joe Amato. In addition to their win, the pair have been invited to attend workshops over the coming months, to further develop their ideas and push the boundaries of apartment living.
